This is Sweet Bay Pond, a borrow pit just east of Main Park Road. Though I haven’t read the background history directly, I suspect Sweet Bay Pond came to being through the construction of Main Park Road itself. Borrow pits are areas where ground matter is excavated to build some other nearby structure or resource (such as a slightly elevated roadway). In some cases, like Sweet Bay Pond, the borrow pit can take on its own natural balance and beauty.
