Batis maritima, the Saltwort;
Monroe county, Florida (14 March 2023).
Spring Break 2023
A salt-tolerant species (as its common name echoes), the Saltwort is a hardy, resilient perennial plant populating a range of coastal habitats around the Florida peninsula (and elsewhere). They are noted to be among the first to take root and expand in areas otherwise-decimated by the destructive forces of hurricanes. Still, saltwort doesn’t need calamity to take root, but a little debris seems to help because saltwort benefits from coastal wrack deposits (accumulations of organic matter at the high tide line).
