Agkistrodon conanti, the Florida cottonmouth;
Collier county, Florida (13 March 2023).
Spring Break 2023
As the sun began to sink down towards the Western horizon, I made my way back toward Big Cypress National Preserve for a night of snaking. Before I could even get back to the campsite for a little dinner and the sunset, however, I stumbled across a lovely Florida cottonmouth basking on a dirt road. As noted before, this venomous species is one of my favorites to photograph. Though they should always be given their due respect, Florida cottonmouths are anything but aggressive. They’re one of the most steadfast and readable species we have in Florida. They can be very easy to work with, albeit with precautions always in play.
