Agama picticauda, the African redhead agama;
Miami-Dade county, Florida (13 March 2023).
Spring Break 2023
I was (somewhat) surprised (but not really) to find African redhead agamas in a South Miami residential park. The species has been abundant in Coral Gables for quite some time, especially around Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, but this was the first time I’d actually seen them in this one specific South Miami park. Given how far north they’ve expanded (through to the Cocoa Beach area with isolated observations as far north as St. Augustine), it’s not a stretch that they’d work their way westward a few miles, too. Heh. Still, as many times as I’ve hit this particular park over the years, this was the first time I found the agamas waiting for me.
