Agkistrodon conanti, the Florida cottonmouth;
Monroe county, Florida (12 March 2023).
Spring Break 2023
Here’s a juvenile Florida cottonmouth flashing a bit of a cautionary pose within the Big Cypress National Preserve region. This is a fairly classic pose; the snake is measuring its surroundings for potential threats (namely me in this instance). If further threatened, the cottonmouth will next gape its mouth wide open, the action which earns the Florida cottonmouth its common name. As for this particular kid, it quickly decided to get off the road, hominids with cameras be damned.
