Spring Break 2023: Alligator mississippiensis

Alligator mississippiensis, the American alligator;
Collier county, Florida (12 March 2023).
Spring Break 2023

Not a great shot, but a grew subject. Here’s a hefty American alligator hanging out by a stable body of water in Fakahatchee Strand. I’ve checked this spot out repeatedly over the years, and it’s certainly looks like it’s an area that has been dredged somewhat by a female gator (or several gators over time) for nesting. Gator holes can be very useful to a variety of other organisms that benefit from the stable water during the otherwise-dry season.
