This is the second of three flooded colonies of Red imported fire ants I photographed at a local Ormond Beach park adjacent to the Tomoka River system. After a few days of extraordinary rain, much of this area was inundated by waters of the Tomoka system, pushing the ants from their terrestrial homesteads. This second group had formed a floating raft comprised of ant bodies and surface debris (such as small leaves and blades of grass). Red imported fire ants are noted specifically for this behavior in times of flooding.
