This is one of three flooded colonies of Red imported fire ants I photographed at a local Ormond Beach park adjacent to the Tomoka River system. After a few days of extraordinary rain, much of this area was inundated by waters of the Tomoka system, pushing the ants from their terrestrial homesteads. This first group had taken to an elevated pavilion in the middle of the park, seeking higher ground. They were in the process of colonizing from the ground up to the roof of the pavilion.
