Salt Marsh Bandeds, Part VI (09 May 2020)

Part VI:
Lateral/Dorsal Scaling and Patterning

Florida banded watersnakes are extremely variable in color and pattern, but this individual was (beautifully) par-for-course with our local Bandeds in Volusia county. Dark dorsal base tone with muted dark red bands, and dark red pictis on the ventral pattern. This individual had some fantastic contrast in its pattern. Of note, there were no extended stripe patterns dorsally or ventrally, something you sometimes see in Floridian Nerodia clarkii populations. This was, overall, a very healthy and firm Nerodia fasciata pictiventris.

GENUS NERODIA

Volusia county, Florida (09 May 2020).
