Agkistrodon conanti, 07 May 2020

Agkistrodon conanti, the Florida cottonmouth;
Volusia county, Florida (07 May 2020).

No more than twenty yards from where I photographed the infected Brown watersnake, I came across one of the largest damn Florida cottonmouths I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t get a clear reference shot to show its size, but this thing was massive. It’s torso was easily thicker than my aftarms. The behemoth was defensively postured beneath a decent amount of foliage adjacent to a tiny, darkwater creek. It watched me warily and eventually took to the water (as we’ll see in the next shot).
