Nerodia taxispilota, 25 May 2019

Nerodia taxispilota, the Brown watersnake;
Volusia county, Florida (25 May 2019).
Learn more about this species at iNaturalist.org.

This Brown watersnake appears to be nearing ecdysis, the shedding of its scales (note the blue-sheen on the ocular/eye scale), but it was also sporting a bit of an infection (see anterior labial scales, that bit of yellowish ick). It’s possible this individual was victim to Snake Fungal Disease, an emerging and spreading fungal disease impacting snake populations throughout much of North America. SFD can also cause ocular scales to cloud over.
