Anolis porcatus / carolinensis, 18 March 2017

Anolis porcatus, the Cuban green anole,
potentially Anolis carolinensis, the Carolina green anole,
(or a hybrid of the two).
Miami-Dade county, Florida (18 March 2017).

In South Florida, it is extremely difficult to differentiate between our native Carolina green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) and non-native Cuban green anoles (Anolis porcatus). The visual distinctions between the two species are strained at best, and further research is needed in understanding to what degree these two species hybridize and interact with one another in South Florida. This individual was quite large for a Carolina green anole. Though I’m not sure I’d wager my life on such an identification, I think this may be either Anolis porcatus or, at least, a strong hybrid of the two.
