Anhinga anhinga, the Anhinga;
Collier county, Florida (15 March 2018).
Series: Spring Break 2018.
Though some folks may think of flamingos when they think of Florida, I’m more likely to think of the Anhinga (cleverly named Anhinga anhinga in Linnaean taxonomy). Though certainly not limited or exclusive to Florida (the species ranges throughout much of North, Central, and South America), it’s a species I damn near always see when I’m romping about fresh water habitats. They are seemingly ubiquitous. This individual was quietly cleaning itself atop a perch resting over a shallow thicket of marshy pond water, a classic Anhinga posture and behavior.
