Cladonia evansii, the Powder puff deer lichen;
Volusia county, Florida (02 March 2018).

Following up from our previous post, here’s the second type of Cladonia lichen I often find in the somewhat sandy stretches of inland Volusia county. This is the Powder puff deer lichen, Cladonia evansii. Seemingly more abundant than the Dixie reindeer lichen (Cladonia subtenuis), the Powder puff deer lichen is generally smaller but more widespread. When you find a little “puff” of deer lichen, odds are there’ll be tons of other puffs nearby, so to speak. Little puffs everywhere.
